1 - 2) There is a style of weaving in Northeast Thailand called Mut Mee, also known as Ikat. It involves tying strings (photo #1) or plastic strips (photo #2) around some of the weft (or warp) to create a pattern in the threads after they are dyed. Color does not penetrate the tied area. 3) Sometime there will be more than one color used - pictures from Thailand and Cambodia.

4) In the dying process the silk is first washed; 5) A dye bath is then prepared in a caldron of boiling water; 6) Finally, the silk, attached to plastic-covered wire handles, is dipped into the hot bath - photos from Pak Thong Chai, Northeast Thailand.
